âIâm scared,â Sarah said, holding my hand tighter than was comfortable.
âMe too,â I reassured her. âDonât worry, the lights will be back on in no time. Youâll see.â
After what seemed like an eternity in the darkness, the lights finally came back on.
But everything had a sinister edge to it. As if it wasnât bad enough when the sheriff was killed, this felt a lot worse, because we didnât know if there was another victim waiting for us in the great hall.
We slowly walked, each of us dreading that someone we cared about might be dead.
As soon as we came to the great hall, Jonathan ran to Sarahâs side.
âThank God youâre all right,â he said. âI knew it was a stupid idea letting you go off like that.â He glared at me, as if I was the one that made the lights go out.
Kane and Troy came to my side.
âWas anyone hurt?â I asked them.
Jonathan and Kane gave each other a look.
âWhat is it?â I asked. âIt better not be Gran.â
âSheâs fine,â Troy reassured me. âBut Mrs. V wasnât so lucky.â
âWhat happened?â
âIt looks like a heart attack,â Jonathan was quick to say.
âActually, it looks more like she was scared to death. You should see her face,â Troy said.
âHeâs not lying,â Kane said. âIt was kind of horrifying.â
âTake me to her,â I said. âWith any luck, her ghost is still hanging around and she can tell us what exactly scared her so much.â
I found Mrs. V standing over her body, covered by a tablecloth, a distraught look on her face. The sheriff, to his credit, was trying to comfort her.
âWhat happened?â I asked her without even looking at the body. Sometimes, when the death was unusually horrific, it was best that the recently dead didnât see the bodies they just left behind.
âIt was so awful,â Mrs. V said. âThe most terrifying faces.â
âYou could see them in the darkness?â I asked her, a bit surprised.
âNo,â she said, âright after the lights came back on, they were right in front of me. They almost scared me to death.â She looked at her ghostly form. âActually, it looks like they did scare me to death.â
âCan you describe what they looked like?â
I ignored the weird looks I was getting from officers and civilians alike.
âI donât know. They looked absolutely deranged is what Iâd say.â Then she looked me in the eye. âIâm sorry I was so awful to you.â
âDonât worry about that, Mrs. V, just try to stay calm.â
âThereâs no heaven, is there?â She said, looking more than a little disappointed.
âYou can only move on after youâve worked through your unresolved issues. In this case, Iâm guessing itâs your death.â
She nodded in understanding. âPlease tell Jonathan Iâm sorry for making such a scene. And Sarah, too. It all seems so silly now.â
âDonât worry, they know,â I reassured her. âBut Iâll tell them anyway.â
I relayed the message to Jonathan and Sarah.
Jonathan for once didnât make a sarcastic remark. I guess with his grandmother, the woman who raised him, dead, he really didnât have it in him to insult me.
